OBJECTIVES
This project pursues four main objectives:
Demonstrate that with good management practices cabin waste can successfully tackled. A great deal of cabin waste can be separated on-board, improving the amount of waste recycled and its purity, thereby obtaining a better valorisation.
Prove that Cat. 1 waste can be dealt with in a more environmentally friendly way. Currently, by Spanish law international catering waste has to be disposed to landfill or incinerated.
Contribute to the reduction of the high carbon footprint associated to the generation and inadequate management of cabin waste.
Set the basis for replication through standard protocols. A principal strength of the project resides in its comprehensive approach, the strong partnership and its replication potential as will be demonstrated at Heathrow airport.
OBJECTIVES & SCOPE
OBJECTIVE 1
OBJECTIVE 1
REDUCE THE GENERATION OF WASTE AND INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF RECYCLING
Reducing 5% of waste.
Recovering 80% of the total cabin waste, approx. 4,500 tonnes per year through the implementation of the main actions related to this objective.
Increasing waste purity and reducing cost of elimination.
OBJECTIVE 2
OBJECTIVE 2
ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT MEASURES FOR CATEGORY 1 WASTE
Treat a small fraction of Cat.1 with different methods to prove it innocuous.
Scale the treatment of Cat.1 waste to industrial levels.
Develop an integrated best practice.
OBJECTIVE 3
OBJECTIVE 3
REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT
Reduction of GHG emissions, estimated at 4,340 t CO2 eq. per year.
OBJECTIVE 4
OBJECTIVE 4
REPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
Replication of the model at Heathrow airport, in London.
We expect to reach 10 million passengers per year and a total of 1,000 t stakeholders through dissemination activities at (inter)national level.
