This week, new characterizations will be carried out of the packaging waste collected on flights with separation on board and those generated by the catering activity itself. They are introduced into a 20m3 capacity compactor located in the Gate Gourmet facilities and moved to Ferrovial’s selection plant.

Once in the plant, a study of the composition of a representative sample of 250kg of these residues is first carried out, which allows to verify that a good separation of residues at source is being carried out and so to detect possible areas of improvement.

Once the waste is processed in the plant, carrying out the selection by materials (PET, PEAD, Film, Plastic mixture, Brik, Steel, Aluminum, Paper – Cardboard) a quality control of each material is carried out. Finally, a characterization of the rejection line of the plant is performed to see what materials are in this stream.

The better the separation at source, the easier it is to carry out the sorting work, so it will be able to separate more materials for further recycling.
